Until recently, much of the development had been concentrated on the creation of excellent indoor spaces for members. With that complete, the focus was next on the formation of a 350m2 outdoor courtyard, an ideal social area for families to relax on warm summer days.
Designed to maximise indoor/outdoor flow, members now have the choice of attractive smoking and non-smoking sections.
The New Outdoor Members’ Area features an architecturally designed curved schist clad feature wall, to match the aesthetic of the 12m-entrance to the Club. This feature is complemented by a curved shade sail – mirroring the angles of the Club roof.
The Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club is the second biggest “Cossie Club” in New Zealand.
The new courtyard area features ground beams and masonry block work with a screen fixed above. The concrete block and glass wall perimeter creates a statement open outdoor space; the only enclosed area is the new storeroom.
In achieving the Outdoor Members’ Area, part of the existing car park was removed to increase the building footprint and to allow for an extension.
The exposed aggregate slabs were poured on site and extensive state-of-the art exterior LED lighting was inlaid within the walls, floor, and underneath the seating – creating a modern and inviting aesthetic.
Special Info / Challenges:
The Club remained fully operational whilst construction was undertaken. This meant that common areas were cordoned off, to ensure that disruption to Cossie Club members were minimal.
