Lower Hutt’s Queensgate Westfield Mall required an extension to accommodate for the new JB Hi-Fi store. Extra space was acquired from the existing mall’s car park.
ADC demolished the original Ground floor retail store. The ceiling, (also the foundation of floor 1 car park) was suspended with structural steel frames, providing temporary support for the slab. This ensured the continuous operation of the floor 1 car park.
Two pours completed the new 1300m² floor plate. Pouring of the concrete foundation began at 3:00am to avoid heavy foot traffic. The store now connects seamlessly from the car park, into the existing mall and is up to 100% of the seismic code.
Special Information/ Challenges
The project had a tight time-frame to meet the needs of shoppers during the Christmas season. Noisy work was conducted between the hours of 5:30pm and 9:00am, avoiding disruption to mall staff and customers.
Careful programme management was required during this busy season to maintain mall access at all times. The new concrete floor for one 6m² entrance was poured in 3 stages enabling continuous use.
