The historical Haitaitai Pharmacy is a two storey building with the pharmacy at street level and two apartments upstairs. Completion was urgent as the structure was sinking into the ground. ADC had 17 weeks to complete the project which included requirements for strengthening, refurbishment and extension.
Because of unstable ground the pharmacy had to be lifted and levelled out. A new concrete base and seismic strengthening provide a sound foundation. Portal frames were installed from one end of the building to the other. For added stability, a 1000m x 500m strip footing was fitted around the outside.
Originally built with native timber, the external colour scheme ensures the pharmacy retains its historical feel. Inside the building was refurbished to an impressive, modern standard while keeping in character with the culture of Hataitai Village. The new building is completely fitted out with new electrical, lighting, plumbing upgrades and new joinery by Jones and Sandford Joinery Ltd. New kitchens and bathrooms were installed on both floors.
Special Information/ Challenges
This was a staged project, allowing the pharmacy to continue business. The pharmacy operated from the back entrance while construction continued on the front and vice versa.
