Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club

Client:
Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club
Construction value:
$390,000
Scope of Works:

The Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club is the second biggest “Cossie Club” in New Zealand.

Until recently, much of the development had been concentrated on the creation of excellent indoor spaces for members. With that complete, the focus is now on the formation of a 350m2 outdoor courtyard, an ideal social area for families to relax on warm summer days.

Designed to maximise indoor/outdoor flow, members now have the choice of attractive smoking and non-smoking sections.

The New Outdoor Members’ Area features an architecturally designed curved schist clad feature wall, to match the aesthetic of the 12m-entrance to the Cossie Club. This feature is complemented with a curved shade sail – mirroring the angles of the Club roof.

The new courtyard area features ground beams and masonry block work with a screen fixed above. This very handsome concrete block and glass wall perimeter creates a statement open outdoor space; the only enclosed area is the new storeroom.

In achieving this Outdoor Members’ Area, part of the existing car park was removed to increase the building footprint and to allow for an extension.

The exposed aggregate slabs were poured on site and extensive state-of-the art exterior LED lighting was inlaid within the walls, floor, and underneath the seating – creating a modern and inviting aesthetic.

Special Info / Challenges:

The Club remained fully operational whilst construction has been undertaken. This meant that common areas were cordoned off, to ensure that disruption to the Cossie Club was minimal.
