Stokeswood Care Home and Hospital

Client:
BUPA Care Services
Construction value:
$3.4 million
Scope of Works:

Armstrong Downes Commercial was delighted to return to Stokeswood Care Home and Hospital in 2014 to build a new 24 bedroom hospital wing. This is the second major expansion project Armstrong Downes has undertaken on the Stokes Valley site, following an expansion to the original facility in 2003.

The new hospital wing includes a 1000m2 concrete floor, timber frame, shadow ply cladding and Colorsteel® roofing. The floor plate was sectioned into 24 very comfortable rooms, each with private ensuite facilities.

In addition, a new kitchen was developed along with refurbishment of the dining room and new landscaped car park.

The new facilities have several strong environmental features such as solar panels for all gas hot water heating and underground water storage tanks for the collection of rainwater for use in gardens and toilets. The building is also fully double glazed and insulated for energy efficiency and comfort.

One of a network of 45 care homes throughout New Zealand, the new hospital wing is positioned at the southern end of the site and takes full advantage of the lovely park-like gardens.

The 2003 project included a 30 room extension to the existing rest home and a new hospital wing built on the northwest corner of the complex. All but five of the patient rooms were revamped and modernised along with a new commercial kitchen, driveways and entrance. These facilities continue to perform as required and work well with these latest developments.

Special Info / Challenges:

For both projects the care home and facilities have been in full use so it is important to ensure the site remain fully operational and that construction takes place with minimal noise and no disruption to day to day living and care.
