After twenty-two years of serving the Johnsonville community, the Onslow Medical Centre has expanded their practice with a purpose built facility on the neighbouring section.
The new medical centre includes five large doctors’ rooms, nurse consulting rooms, treatment and minor surgery rooms, dispensary, and administration and staff areas. The centre is a single storey with improved road access and undercover parking.
The 390m2 Onslow Medical Centre is clad in cedar and finished with a colorsteel roof. The roof is fitted with 10kW photovoltaic solar panels for the Centre’s use and feeding unused electricity back into the grid. The design uses scale and materials that fit well into the residential neighbourhood. Yet, at the same time the aesthetic clearly signifies a non-residential function at the gateway to Johnsonville.
The modern build provides an inviting space, clad in warm timbers with a living green wall. In addition, the architectural canopy with glass veranda affords a pleasant entrance and reception area, filled with natural light.
The Onslow Medical Centre intends to repurpose the original site to house allied medical professionals such as physiotherapists and counsellors in the creation of a dynamic ‘health hub’ for the local community.
Moorefield Road is a busy road, demanding considerable traffic management. The site was difficult to access, being on a corner and roundabout. In addition, there was a heavy pedestrian presence with a school and college nearby.
