Hutt Park - Indoor Sports Centre

Client:
Wellington Indoor Sports
Construction value:
$6 million
Scope of Works:

This building was designed to provide a new commercially operated venue for indoor sports leagues and Junglerama Children’s Entertainment in the Hutt Valley. It services thousands of people annually, and is utilised by many schools in the area.

Built in conjunction with Hutt City Council, this building is a 9m high structure on a timber piled foundation, with a concrete floor. The walls are precast panels to 2.4m high and the balance of walls and roof are Kingspan insulated panels.

The 5,000m2 complex, built in 8 months, includes 7 courts, changing rooms, a Junglerama Children’s Play Area, café and bar facilities, as well as a viewing area for spectators. The base building was constructed by Armstrong Downes and fitted out by Hutt Indoor Sports.

Special Info / Challenges:

Armstrong Downes was selected for this build given its proven track record in large-scaled spanned spaces, such as supermarkets and sports centres.

There was a short time frame for this build given the straight forward nature of the construction. It was the first time Armstrong Downes used Kingspan materials.

Architect Geoffrey Meyer highlights the centre’s natural ventilation and lighting to reduce running costs, as well as insulation to control temperature in both winter and summer.
